James Mantach / Mantoch and Jane Simpson

I cannot find a record of the marriage of James Mantach and Jane Simpson.  He was described as a gardener on his daughter Elizabeth’s death certificate.

James Mantach and Jane Simpson had at least five children:

Note – As the baptismal records give only the father’s name it is difficult to be sure that these five children were all siblings, especially as there are three different addresses given. However, three of the entries include Simson witnesses (Janet, Elizabeth and James) and the other two have addresses which match the preceding entry (Elizabeth and Margaret were both Curshallach, Newlands, James and Jean were both Swine-house, Newlands).  There is a gap between James in 1775 and Jean in 1781, which may be accounted for by a miscarriage or stillbirth, or may suggest that there was another child as yet undiscovered.

Janet 31 December 1769

Janet, lawful daughter to James Mantoch in that part of the New-land called the Corbie-hillock was baptized. Witnesses Janet Innes, daughter to Pitcraigie, Janet Simson in Dundurcas, Archibald Simson there, William Hay there and William Mantoch, brother to the above named James Mantoch.

“William Mantoch, brother to the above-named James” is an excellent clue to the preceding generation.
